Literacy
Due to the remoteness of the Chepang settlements and non-availability of educational institutions in their areas, literacy rate among the Chepang is very low. 76.78% are illiterate. In the entire Chepang Community there is only one Chepang who has a post graduate degree. So far there are only four graduates from the Chepangs, and only 149 have passed the SLC Examination (Grade X) and 31 have passed Intermediate level. Moreover, the parents who are illiterate are not able to understand the importance of education and motivate their children. The absolute lack of hope of finding financial resources for pursuing their higher studies dampens their eagerness to study well even in the High School level. Again, the children are necessitated to spend their time searching for food in the forests and water in remote places. The poor economical conditions do not allow them to keep the children in a hostel to do their studies. There are government primary schools in many of the Chepang settlements. But in no Chepang dominated village there is a Junior High School or High School. Hence drop out after the primary level of studies is more than 70%. Even where there are Primary schools, due to insufficient monitoring in those remote places, classes are not conducted properly.
