Health Condition among Chepangs
Three stark realities of the Chepangs cause severe health problems among them. (1) Lack of education and ignorance about the health matters (2) Intense poverty prevents them from accessing themselves to proper Healthcare facilities. (3) Remoteness of their dwelling places makes it almost impossible for the government and Voluntary Health workers to reach out to the sick in critical times. In many Chepang villages there is also a fourth factor that affects the health of the Chepang, namely, shortage of water which has direct impact on health. These factors make the health condition of the Chepangs very bleak. The shortage of food items in five months a year is a major reason for them to fall sick.
The Shaman plays a major role in the health aspect of the Chepangs. Diana Riboli writes in her book on the Chepangs : “The Shaman is responsible for the mental and physical health of the Chepang Community and his cures are the only one recognized as valid by the inhabitants of the village. Any project concerning matters of health should therefore work alongside the Shaman”. The Chepangs do have great faith in the healing power of the Shaman and hence they are not earnest to seek proper medical help.
